A NO SEW (I’m all about no sew) Under 5$ Super Hero Cape Tutorial:
![]() |
||
| you didn’t know batman ran around in zoo pj’s and jumped over flowers? |
Supplies:
See through file folder, stencil paper or plain old freezer paper (I wanted to reuse mine so I went with the file folder)
An exacto knife
Self healing cutting mat
Scissors
Desired paint color
T-Shirt
Sponge/Stencil Brush
Printed picture of your super hero logo. (I just google searched Batman logos in images and chose the one I liked the best)
Cardboard or T-Shirt Board to paint on
Cardboard or T-Shirt Board to paint on
Step 1: Anchor your super hero logo and file folder to your cutting mat so that it doesn’t move.
Step 2: Use your exacto knife and trace the logo starting from the middle and working your way out. I’ve found that it’s a lot easier to do it this way than working from the outside in.
I like to peel away my image once it’s cut so it doesn’t get in my way and just set it to the side.
Step 3: Stretch your t-shirt over a piece of cardboard and make sure that it’s taught so that it doesn’t wiggle around while you’re painting.

Step 4: Anchor your stencil onto your shirt. I either recommend double sided tape or if you’re using freezer paper then iron it on.

Step 5: Start painting. If you notice that you are really close to the edge of your stencil and you might get some on your shirt. Simply line up a sheet of paper with your stencil and keep going around. I LOVE using my stencil sponge because you simply move around your stencil in a stamping motion (straight up, straight down). This helps the paint not to get underneath the edges of your stencil.
My image needed two coats, it’s important to let your paint to dry between coats so you can either let it air dry OR if you’re impatient like me, whip out your blow dryer and help it along! Please note that if you let your stencil get too hot it will start to warp…I may or may not be speaking from experience…

Once your second layer of paint is semi dry, you will want to remove your stencil so it doesn’t dry on completely. Use a safety pin or something similar to lift up the edge of your stencil and get it started, that way you don’t mess up your paint job.
When your image is completely dry you are ready to start cutting out your cape shape!
Step 6: Find either the side seam or side fold in your shirt (it’s from the arm pit down) and cut along that line.

Step 7: Lay out your shirt so that it is flat. This is about where my little batman decided that he needed to help me. So I hope you don’t mind glimpses of my assistant…

Step 8: Cut off your sleeves and set them to the side (I have an awesome tutorial that uses them on my blog!)

Step 9: Cut about 2-3 inches from the collar of your shirt on the side of your shirt that your logo is not on. SAVE THE REST of your shirt, there are so many things you can do with that scrap…
Step 10: Fold your shirt in half length wise (hot dog style) and cut it into a cap style shape. I just cut from the top middle of the neckline and kind of made it into a half circle.
Step 11: Keeping your shirt folded in half, fold it in half again (so it’s in fourths)
Step 12: Cut a triangle shape to add a zig zag to the bottom of your cape (or you can just leave it alone…)
Step 13: Put your cape on a super hero and let them have a blast!
Here is a sneak peek of a tutorial I will be posting soon of what you can make with your leftover t-shirt scraps! Hint: They’re super popular and sell for at least 8 dollars a pair…sometimes even more!
