Tutorial Tuesday: Washi Laptop Makeover

Did I leave you guys hanging waiting for the Tutorial?! It is Tutorial Tuesday so I thought I’d go ahead and let you guys in on the secret!

It is the easiest tutorial ever! It is just SUPER time consuming. So POP in your favorite movie and go to work! :)

I’ve needed a new laptop for a while. The screen on my old one broke so we turned it into a desktop. Then just recently it started doing some crazy things so I knew it was time… I loved the new laptop on it’s own. I had never seen one like it before. I could have left it as is, but I LOVE personalizing things. Enter the Washi Tape Makeover!
You can see the post where I got the inspiration here: Meet Red

Supplies:

Washi Tape (choose a few different colors…I went with 12 because that’s how many I had)

Scissors (don’t use your nice scissors, the tape will get them extra gunky)
Ruler
Computer Keyboard
This project is seriously so simple.
I started with the bigger keys and just measured them with my ruler and cut the tape to size.

I moved on to the smaller keys (not the smallest, I left those without)
I realized that one key is about the width of the tip of my finger, so I didn’t even have to use a ruler anymore. I basically unrolled some tape, put my finger up to it and cut. If it was too big I trimmed it down a tiny bit and that’s it!
I did that 66 times.
I bet you could totally use the same method of using your tip of your finger as a guide! It’ll make life easier and help speed the process.
The great thing about Washi Tape is that it’s like masking tape, so you can peel it off and re-stick it!
Please note: After using it a few times, you might notice the tips coming up a little bit. Simply rubbing them down with your finger gets them to re-stick. For me, I used the edge of a paint brush in preparation for my next step.

I wanted a more permanent solution so I took a VERRRYY fine tipped paint brush and put a minuscule…I mean MINUSCULE amount of modpodge on the edges (not the sides…just the edge).

IF you try that please be extremely careful, you could ruin your computer, so proceed at your own risk!!!!

And there you have it! A unique computer nobody else has! :)

He fell asleep holding her hand. So sweet!

What can I say?! I’m a proud Momma! :)

**please note that since washi tape is transparent you can still see the keys!!**

Wow, that definitely makes your computer unique! I don't think I'd be brave enough to do it though…it's a good thing you can still see which key is which, though. I can type but some of those faraway keys on the side I rarely think about and I don't think I'd remember which is which!

  16. Oh man….so simple…yet so amazing! I love washi tape!

  17. Jess, this is the custest, stinkin' thing ever! Could not PIN fast enough. LOVE!

    • Thank you Nike! I so appreciate you stopping by to visit!

Can I just say I loved your comment about “friendly fire”. I think that was my biggest issue about it. I felt so blindsided. Oh well, things happen right?!

Anyways, I'm glad you came by and I appreciate the pin! :)

  20. I've seen a lot of washi tape on blogs, but no one ever mentioned it's transparent! I don't get out much (literally, health restrictions) and I don't want to order something new I've never seen. But the keyboard and the IKEA frames are great! My nearest IKEA is about 50 miles away so I really don't get there often. I devour the catalog! It's pretty hard to shop there in a wheelchair, can't push a cart and use the chair controls. Maybe I need to see if there are other bloggers who would be interested in doing what you did at IKEA in CT? Janet

    • Yep! It's definitely transparent. Some of them are harder to see through than others, you can definitely see through them. I had a hard time ordering some at first too because I just wasn't sure what I was getting, but I'm glad I took the plunge! Our Ikea is about 40 so I understand your pain…at least a little. I bet it would be way tough to shop there with a wheelchair…I wonder if you could call ahead and ask for assistance or bring someone along. I think our event was catered to us, but it's SO worth the try. I would check and see if you have a CT Bloggers Group. Joining mine was the best thing I have done blogging wise!
